Ho incontrato Clark Anthony a Merano, al Flower Festival, dove ha presentato il suo progetto davvero originale. Gestisce una struttura nella campagna mantovana, un tempo adibita a pompare l’acqua dal Mincio ai canali di irrigazione per i campi vicini, dal 2015 è diventata sede dell’Associazione “Reading Retreats in Rural Italy”. Con amore e creatività, passo dopo passo, si prende cura di una parte della casa, arredandola e rendendola un luogo per leggere, ammirare l’arte o dormire. C’è persino una piccola sala cinema. Le stanze hanno uno stile romantico e accogliente, le sale più grandi ospitano anche mostre d’arte temporanee e se si è fortunati, si può anche incontrare l’artista che espone.
In cortile tiene delle caprette e sulle finestre talvolta fanno capolino i pavoni, qua e là gironzola qualche gallina. Clark ti accoglie con calore e semplicità, chi alloggia nella casa, è invitato a viverla, leggendo, cucinando e dialogando con chi c’è. Sul retro un altro pezzo forte: il suo orto. Un mix incredibile di fiori e di zucche di tutti i tipi, la cui particolarità è che provengono dai semi che lui stesso ha piantato o sono un dono che ha ricevuto. Un posto senza tempo, in cui “tornerò” è una promessa che si vuole mantenere.

Ich habe Clark Anthony in Meran beim Flower Festival kennengelernt, dort hatte er sein originelles Projekt vorgestellt. Er verwaltet eine Struktur auf dem Lande in Mantua, das einst dazu diente, Wasser aus dem Fluss Mincio in die Bewässerungskanäle in die nahen Felder zu pumpen. Seit 2015 ist es Sitz des Vereins “Reading Retreats in Rural Italy”. Mit Liebe und Kreativität wird Schritt für Schritt jeweils ein Teil des Hauses eingerichtet und zu einem Ort zum Lesen, Bewundern von Kunst oder Schlafen gemacht. Es gibt sogar einen kleinen Kinosaal. Die Zimmer sind romantisch und gemütlich eingerichtet, in den größeren Räumen finden auch zeitweilige Kunstausstellungen statt, und wenn man Glück hat, trifft man sogar die Künstlerin oder den Künstler.
Im Hof hält er einige Ziegen und Pfaue schauen manchmal durch die Fenster, hier und da laufen ein paar Hühner herum. Clark empfängt die Menschen mit Wärme und Einfachheit, und die Gäste sind eingeladen, das Haus zu erleben, dort zu lesen, zu kochen und mit den Bewohnern zu sprechen. Auf der Rückseite befindet sich ein weiteres Highlight: sein Gemüsegarten. Eine unglaubliche Mischung aus Blumen und Kürbissen aller Art, deren Besonderheit darin besteht, dass sie aus Samen stammen, die er selbst gesetzt hat oder die er geschenkt bekommen hat. Ein zeitloser Ort, an dem “Ich werde zurückkommen” ein Versprechen ist, das man halten möchte.

I met Clark Anthony in Merano at the Flower Festival, where he presented his original project. He manages a structure in the countryside of Mantua that once served to pump water from the Mincio River into irrigation canals in the nearby fields. Since 2015, it has been home to the association “Reading Retreats in Rural Italy”. With love and creativity, he furnishes each part of the house step by step and turns into a place to read, admire art or sleep. There is even a small cinema room. The rooms are romantically and cosily furnished, in the larger rooms there are also temporary art exhibitions, and if you are lucky you might even meet the artist.
In the courtyard he keeps some goats and peacocks sometimes peep through the windows, here and there a few chickens run around. Clark welcomes people with warmth and simplicity, and guests are invited to experience the house, read, cook and talk to the residents there. At the back is another highlight: his vegetable garden. An incredible mix of flowers and pumpkins of all kinds, whose special feature is that they come from seeds he planted himself or received as gifts. A timeless place where “I will be back” is a promise you want to keep.
